Background of the Study
Phonetic variation in online communication reflects the dynamic interplay between spoken language and digital media. TikTok, a rapidly growing platform known for its short-form video content, provides a unique environment where users express phonetic creativity through audio clips. In Nigeria, TikTok audio clips reveal significant phonetic variations, including modified pronunciations, intonation patterns, and speech rhythm alterations influenced by regional accents and digital trends (Ikechukwu, 2023). This study appraises these variations by comparing phonetic features in TikTok audio clips, examining how digital affordances such as editing tools and viral challenges encourage linguistic innovation. It explores the role of cultural identity, social media influence, and technological constraints in shaping how Nigerians produce and perceive speech online. The research integrates perspectives from phonetics and digital media studies to analyze the adaptive strategies used by content creators, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of the evolution of spoken language in digital contexts (Obi, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the popularity of TikTok in Nigeria, research on the impact of digital media on phonetic variation remains limited. Existing studies predominantly focus on textual analysis, overlooking the auditory dimension of online language. This study addresses this gap by examining TikTok audio clips, aiming to understand how digital trends and technological tools influence phonetic expression. The lack of comprehensive analysis on online phonetic variation hinders our understanding of contemporary speech adaptation in digital environments, thereby necessitating this focused investigation (Chinwe, 2024).
